Empowerment is a multi dimensional social process that helps people gain control over their own lives, communities and in the society by acting upon issues that define as important.

Empowerment occurs within sociological, psychological, economic spheres and at various levels such as individual, group and community and challenges our assumptions about the status quo, asymmetrical power relationships and social dynamics. The realities of women in rural India are difficult to comprehend. Women, most of the times, are even deprived of some of the fundamental human rights and thus denial is justified often in the name of tradition .In rural areas, women are generally relegated to taking care of household duties and cheap labour. They are not perceived as substantial income generating source. The question that needs to be answered is that in a society where men control the destiny of women how is it possible to empower women?

Development

A timely intervention on empowering women spreading across 12 districts of Orissa has been started since the year 2000 to empower the women folk of Orissa especially of the backward region in terms of forming self help groups to access and avail various resources to become economically self reliant and join the mainstream of life.

As the federation is one of the major instruments of WETSH project, in the operational area, women federations have already formed. Through village meeting, promotional meet necessary inputs are giving to the members regarding the conceptual clarity and a result for this, 79 nos. of federations have came to an existence and another five are in the process of formation.

As a matter to strengthening the federation, monthly meeting of the federation executive body members playing a major role where group problems, issues in the locality are identifying and planning also carrying out for solving the same.

In the federation/group level workshop members are focusing their problems in front of the concern line departments and trying to minimize the problems & issues with the convergence of govt. departments.
